Day of Fasting and Prayer Petition

Organizer: Don Baker

Historical Background:

On June 1st, 1774, an important and solemn event occurred in Virginia which helped lead to the Declaration of Independence two years later.

By 1773, The Virginia Association (VA) had become the de facto legislature of Virginia. This is because the Crown-appointed governor, Lord Dunmore, had dissolved the House of Burgesses over concerns of rebellion. Leading the Virginia Association were such patriots as Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, and Robert H. Lee. The VA had determined that a general Congress of the Colonies was needed in order "to produce an unity of action" regarding the measures that should be taken against the abuses of the Crown and Parliament. Therefore, they proscribed that the people should elect county deputies who in turn would appoint delegates to the 1st Continental Congress.

However, the people of Virginia were at a stalemate as to whether to continue under the tyranny of an absolute monarchy or declare independence from Great Britain. The latest abuse against the people was the announced closing of the Boston Port to occur on June 1st, 1774. Jefferson writes in his autobiography, "We were under conviction of the necessity of arousing our people from the lethargy into which they had fallen as to passing events; and thought that the appointment of a day of general fasting & prayer would be most likely to call up & alarm their attention."

The Association subsequently appointed without dissent the "1st day of June, on which the Port bill was to commence, for a day of fasting, humiliation & prayer, to implore heaven to avert from us the evils of civil war, to inspire us with firmness in support of our rights, and to turn the hearts of the King & parliament to moderation & justice."

Jefferson describes that solemn occasion thusly, "the effect of the day thro' the whole colony was like a shock of electricity, arousing every man & placing him erect & solidly on his centre. They chose universally delegates for the convention."

Our Concerns & Petition:

Today we face similar apathy and lethargy among the people of this great Republic. Voter participation rates are at an all-time low. Most individuals feel powerless and apathetic about the politics of the day. Our country is on the brink of financial ruin and our individual rights are being trampled by an increasingly powerful and non-responsive Federal Government. Like the ancient Israelites, too many in our nation have forsaken our True King, the Creator of this Earth and have sought to replace our reliance upon His mercy with the false security of tyranny. Furthermore, we have failed to heed the advice of Samuel Langdon (before the Massachusetts Legislature in 1788) to choose "men of good understanding and known honesty; men of knowledge, improved by experience; men who fear God and hate covetousness; who love truth and righteousness, and sincerely wish for the public welfare."

We sense that the upcoming general election will impact the political future of our Republic perhaps like no other in our history. If there was ever a time when such a solemn occasion to "arouse every man and place him erect & and solidly on his centre" was needed for our generation, it is now. We therefore petition Utah Governor Gary Herbert to proclaim Monday November 1, 2010 as a day of general fasting and prayer in the State of Utah to implore heaven to stir us to remembrance of the Divine Hand which gave us this nation, to increase our charity one to another, to inspire us with firmness in support of our individual rights, and to grant us discernment to select representatives whose hearts are turned toward moderation, equal justice, and public virtue.

"Can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are of the gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with his wrath?" -- Thomas Jefferson

Governor Herbert you are our last line of defense against the tyranny and march to socialism the Federal Government is trying to impose on 'We the People', do not fail us, we're counting on you.

We must awaken to our awful state. Obama was not born in the USA and must be removed to stop all he has started. All signatures of his is null and void. We must have our Senators choosen by our State Legislators to defend the Rights of our STATES. Retuning to the original Constitution will create solutions that will return Domestic Tranquility and justice in our Land. Carolyn

When we have kicked GOd out of schools, military, and government, how can we fault him for "allowing"horrible things to happen to us. We have created an untenable situation for our God to help us! Pray we must and DO it now!

I do not identify myself by any political party or formal Religion, but rather by what truly defines me. I am a Christian, a father, a Patriot and a Free Man. I pledge my life, my fortune, and my sacred honor to the cause of liberty.
