Wow! Tonight's school board meeting was packed in the opposite direction. Overall messages:
*Let's not argue about semantics. A republic is a representative democracy. Fine."
*ASD should not be painted as trying to "destroy our freedoms". This is totally off base in a district where every junior and high school is electing representatives for student government right now!
*The word "democracy" is revered in our community and people will continue to use it to mean " a government in which I have a voice." It is understood but seldom stated that what everyone is talking about is a representative democracy---which is a republic.
*Yes, Utah is a republic. If we need to clarify language, let's do it following the same inclusive (dare I say "democratic"?) procedure used to write the ASD Mission Statement in the first place. We don't have to disrespect the Superintendent and the school board to do it.

Tonight's 2 hours of public comment at the Alpine School District board meeting was an eye opener.

In a prepared statement to over 200 people (standing room only), the board defended their goal to "enculturate" children in the values of a "social democracy." They went on to say (with a straight face) that a social democracy was a "kind of republic." (Google: "social democracy")

The statement was followed by citizens input. Teachers, former teachers, and concerned parents politely but firmly told the board they were dead wrong, that they have no business "enculturating" our children in democratic socialism, and that they expect the board to fix not just the words, but the "culture of socialism" that has crept into our schools.
