ANYTIME a student eats a school lunch, even if they pay full price, they are still taking part of the government’s FREE.  ALL school lunches are subsidized by the federal government.  So anyone who has children who eat school lunch are using the tax dollars of others.

All across the nation there are families who’s only source of income is food stamps.  Yet their children still need toothpaste, shoes, and soap.  Items not covered by food stamps.  Right or wrong, parents in these situations have found ways to use their food stamps (or EBT cards)  to provide these items for their kids.  Maybe they buy milk for their neighbor in return for the cash to go and by laundry detergent or go to the laundry mat.

I’m not talking families that have made scamming the system an art form, or families that choose not to put the proper effort into finding a job.

I’m talking about families that did everything right.  Families who had savings, a job, food storage….prepared in every way.  And then they lost their job.  Go spend some time at the Provo Food Bank.  You’ll find families in this very situation.  (BTW, did you know that this food bank accepts excess garden and orchard produce? ‘Tis the season.)

Should parents who are perfectly able to feed their children be taking part of the summer lunch program?  I wouldn’t and I don’t.

But I wouldn’t be too quick to say that a family receiving food stamps should have their children exempt from school lunches.   At least until you have experienced the situation yourself and led the way in refusing school lunch plans.

Or watched your children go hungry in order to make a political statement.

(And, no.  My family does not receive food stamps.)

I”m even against the free samples at Costco because of all the parents who take their children there to get a free dinner. What is that teaching their children? Let’s go eat on some else’s dime? Like others have echoed on the comment boards, we should not be providing free lunch to anyone, not matter what their economic circumstances.  Whether or not Christ took the food or making the more fortunate feel guilty for not donating food, he is still modeling socialism by giving free food to those who are too lazy to get a job or take responsibility for feeding themselves. Once you feed someone for free, they will expect it again. That is socialism.

I like what Susie said:

Welfare like this turns the gov’t into the father/mother and caretaker, and takes that responsibility away from parents. In this case, there is no teaching children about wise shopping, preparing, cooking, not wasting food, or cleaning up after themselves. It’s all done for them…..and it’s FREE!

Keep up the good work!

TheKingsCourt, are you LDS? If so, please renew your understanding of socialism by reading these posts:

Regardless, Christ didn’t “redistribute” anything in this example. He asked for a voluntary contribution which in the end took up more than they started with after feeding everyone. Socialism is Satan’s doctrine and it *started* in the premortal life. Christ’s doctrine is individual responsibility and laboring for your wages.

Is this a school board issue or a state legislature issue? Who do we talk to about it?
