Outrageous!

This is absolutely incredible! I can't wait to hear the explanation for this “accident”.

Mr. Graff, or whoever posted this, can't even get the Moral Dimension quote straight. It is not “Enculturation of the Young in a Political and Social Democracy”. It is “Enculturating the Young in a Social and Political Democracy”. This, by the Administrator over Educational Services. He is obviously just trying to push a button without having a real grasp of the subject matter….

Pretty dumb mistake, wasn't it? Actually, you are almost right. It is Enculturating the Young INTO a Social and Political Democracy. I've kind of got that one memorized now–emblazed in my head like ASD has emblazened it on their wall. “In” would assume that we are already in a state of social and political democracy (which is probably more factual than not these days unfortunately). “Into” means that they are in the process of taking our children out of their present culture and enculturating them 'into' another culture. Some on the board don't understand this, but for those of us who actually read Goodlad's books instead of just quoting fuzzy feel good statements from them that the district prepares for us, it is very clear what he is trying to do. And for those of us with mothers who have escaped from Stalinist Ukraine because of the enculturation from Ukrainian culture drastically into Communist Russian culture because of Soviet control, we are very very aware of how this happens. Remember, ASD chooses each word very carefully and takes many months to come up with their mission statements. Of course, all they had to do to save themselves a lot of endless meetings was to look in Goodlad's books. He states that phrase verbatim many times. But then again, what do I know? I'm just a parent.

Susie – you are almost correct. On the ASD website where they are defending their mission statement, they say INTO. I don't have the picture of what's emblazoned on the wall at ASD headquarters (I know you do) but, go to the David O. McKay School of Education and it says IN.
So if ASD is saying INTO and BYU is saying IN, does this mean that BYU thinks we are there, and ASD doesn't but hopes to be? :)
BTW – ASD can't get much straight anyway. Read that message to parents regarding the MS. They mess up all the values, all the statements, and say things that aren't really there as far as the values, etc. go. These are the people we want as educators?
